As we head into our second season with the Kyoto Work Pant, we asked UW designer David Keyte, his inspiration behind the already much-loved pant.

"They were something I wanted to make after the shapes I saw in Japan, the simplicity of the old workwear pants and humble drawstrings pants used traditionally in Japan.

I had collected a few old vintage pants from my visits to Tokyo, but they were not really wearable in a modern sense, so while they were the real inspiration these UW Kyoto Pants are our contemporary version of the “look” of those vintage Japanese work pants, and they are for wearing today rather than in a Japanese rice field!"

The traditional Japanese pants are taken from David's archive collection and known as a “Monpe” Pant. Our interpretation of the traditional Japanese pant was to create a contemporary shape, with extra panels into the crotch. Our Kyoto Pant has a shorter length than our regular pants and a single front pleat with an elasticated drawcord waistband and patch pockets at the rear.
