Trading - Pokemon Fire Red and Leaf Green Guide - IGN (2024)

Once you have caught an ample supply of Pokémon, you'll want to trade them with your family and friends to get rare Pokemon, or avoid the work of catching certain hard-to-grab monsters. In fact, whenever catching Pokémon, it is always a good idea to grab two (especially with rare ones), so that when it comes trading time, you have some interesting Pokémon to offer.

On the flip side, there are certain Pokemon you'll almost never want to trade (unless you own both versions of the game). These Pokémon are:

  • Squirtle (and its evolutions)
  • Charmander (and its evolutions)
  • Bulbasaur (and its evolutions)
  • Zapdos
  • Articuno
  • Moltres

To trade Pokémon, go to the upstairs of the Pokémon Center, and have your friend go there as well (in his/her version of the game). Go to the far right counter and select the Trade Center option at the Pokémon Cable Club or go tothe Wireless Union Room and use the wireless adapter to connect with other users. Pokémon can be traded between LeafGreen, FireRed, Sapphire and Ruby. Trading between the Sapphire and Ruby games is the only way to get many Pokemon and Items into this game.

Through trading, certain Pokémon will evolve in different ways. Experiment with held items while trading in order to get your Pokemon to transform in even more new and interesting ways. Here is a handy list of the Pokemon that evolve via trade:

  • Machoke evolves to a Machamp via trade.
  • Graveler evolves to a Golem via trade.
  • Kadabra evolves to an Alakazam via trade.
  • Slowpoke evolves to a Slowking if it is holding a King's Rock when traded.
  • Seadra evolves to a Kingrda if it is holding a Dragon Scale when traded.
  • Scyther evolves to a Scizor if it is holding a Metal Coat when traded.
  • Poliwhirl evolves to a Politoed if holding a King's Rock when traded.
  • Haunter evolves to Gengar when traded.
  • Onix evolves to Steelix if holding a Metal Coat when traded.
