Simple ideas for maximizing your dining room.
If you're in the market for new dining chairs, we know that getting the right size is so important. Read on for a few of our go-to tips for figuring out dining chair dimensions and finding the best chairs for your table.
The two most common dining chair seat heights are 18" – 23" and 24" – 26". This has to do with the fact that most dining tables are either a standard height of 28" – 30" or counter height at 34" – 36". For all tables, we recommend keeping at least 12" of space between the seat of your chair and the tabletop. For your safest bet, pair standard-height tables with chairs whose seats are 18" – 23" high and counter-height tables with chairs whose seats are 24" – 26" high.
Chair arms should be able to easily slide under your dining table. Leave at least 7" of space between the chair arm and the bottom of the table. Psst: To make sure it fits, check the chair's arm height under the "Weights + Dimensions" tab.
The most common dining chair width is between 16" and 20". We recommend giving each guest at least 24" – 26" of dining space and leaving 6" of space between each chair for elbow room and to easily slide in and out of the table.
Trying to figure out how many chairs to buy? Measure the length of the side of your table where the chairs will go, from one leg to the other, in inches. Divide that number by 32 for the number of chairs you can fit on that side. Let's say your table is 96" long. Divide 96" by 32, and you'll get three. Your table can comfortably fit three guests on that side.
Remember that arms add a few inches to the width of your dining chairs. If space is limited, choose armless chairs or only place chairs with arms at the head and foot of your table.
Pro Tip:
Measure your chairs at their widest point. Depending on the design you choose, this can either mean the seat or the back of the chair.
