The day chocolate and peanut butter collided (2024)
One summer day two teenage boys walked aimlessly toward each other on an empty neighborhood street. One was eating a chocolate bar and the other was dipping his paw into a mug of peanut butter.
As they clashed head on, the boys and the two flavors mixed, and, of course, you know the rest.
“Hey, you got chocolate on my peanut butter,” said one. “You got peanut butter on my chocolate,” the other fumed. After a cautious but yummy taste test, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup was born. It’s hard to imagine that this classic TV commercial will be 47 years old in August.
Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup Origin
However, as good as the renowned television spot was, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup wasn’t an accidental creation. It was invented by a struggling dairyman named Harry Reese.
Reese worked on a dairy farm owned by Milton Hershey, the Hershey chocolate king, and in 1928 Harry began toying with the idea of mixing peanut butter and chocolate in cups. He founded the H. B. Reese Candy Co., and eventually sold out to Hershey for $23.5 million.
Today Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup is the No. 2 best-selling candy product behind M&Ms.
Relatively modest accidental inventions are wrapped in interesting accounts, but you have to be careful in ferreting out fact from fiction. For example:
The potato chip was long considered an unintentional product of a café cook named George Crum in 1853. It seemed that many mornings Crum would prepare a cranky customer a breakfast of fried potatoes, ham and eggs.
On many occasions the customer would send the order back, fuming that the potatoes were thick, soggy and underdone. One day angry Mr. Crum sliced pieces of potatoes extremely thin and fried them to a crisp. The customer raved, and the potato chip was created.
Good story, but not true. The origin of the potato chip remains speculative.
On the side of truth, however, a struggling 19th century civil engineer began tedious work on constructing a giant revolving observation wheel to be used at county fairs and carnivals. In 1893, after much coaxing, he finally encouraged backers to put his invention on display at the Chicago World’s Fair.
The exhibit rotated slowly and peaked at 264 feet. It could carry 2,160 people at a time and became the hit of the fair, grossing $10,000 per day and over $750,000 by the end of the fair. The inventor was George Ferris and his creation became known as, what else, the Ferris wheel.
George was reportedly cheated out of his share of the earnings and he died of typhoid and near penniless at the age of 37. Today observation structures similar to the Ferris wheel span the world, some reaching heights well over 500 feet.

Chocolate history starts out around 1000BC in Latin America, where cacao trees grow wild. The first people to use chocolate were probably the Olmec of what is today southeast Mexico, and their word, “kakawa,” gave us our word “cacao.”
The Founders: The Hershey Company was founded by Milton Hershey in 1894, while Cadbury was founded by John Cadbury in 1824. Both men were passionate about chocolate and had a strong vision for their companies.
The Olmec, one of the earliest civilizations in Latin America, were the first to turn the cacao plant into chocolate. They drank an ancient chocolate drink during rituals and used it as medicine. Centuries later, the Mayans praised chocolate as the drink of the gods.

Nutella is popularly marketed as a healthy breakfast item or snack, but it actually is composed of 55% sugar. This puts it very close in nutritional ranking to any chocolate candy on the market.
