What is the difference between 3 way and 4 way soil? ›

Our 3-way soil mix consists of equal parts sand, loam, and compost. This is a general purpose soil with excellent drainage. Use 3-way soil mix for lawns and landscape areas. Our 4-way soil mix consists of equal parts sand, loam, compost and super compost (dairy manure).

This mix contains approximately 40% sedge peat moss, 35% black topsoil, 15% USGA spec sand and 10% Manure. This mixture is mostly used for gardens, flower beds, planters and trees, it can be used as an all-purpose mix similar to the 3 way mix, however manure is known to cause weeds.

Otherwise, topsoil delivery can cost between $80 and $170, depending on where you live and how much topsoil you need.

How Much Does A Yard Cover? A cubic yard of material can be spread to cover 100 square feet (10×10 foot area) at 3 inches of depth.

Loam soil is often thought of as the ideal soil type for plants because it's a combination of all the above-mentioned soils. It also has enough nutrients to sustain plants and crops. It's easy to plant with and drains well. Numerous plants and crops plant well in loam soil.

They may be called 3-way or 5-way mixes, but no matter what they're called they usually consist of mixtures of subsoil, sand, composted yard wastes, sawdust, manures and biosolids (sewage sludge).

The Formula for Soil Mix

To create your own perfect soil mix, thoroughly blend 1 part peat or coir, 1 part perlite or vermiculite, one-half part composted bark, and one-half part worm castings.

Another way to calculate how much soil you need is by using the area method. Simply multiply the length and width of your bed together, then divide that number by 27 (the cubic feet in a cubic yard). This will give you the number of cubic yards of soil you need, assuming an average soil depth of one foot.

The key to success with soil blocks is using a mix of peat, compost, soil, and sand or Perlite. The most important ingredient to this mixture is the peat - Its Fibrous consistency is used to both bind the material together and help retain moisture.

There are roughly 27 cubic feet in a yard, and a 40-pound sack of dirt commonly covers around 0.75 cubic feet. This really intends that there are roughly 36 sacks of dirt in a yard.

When you need a large quantity of soil or compost, it's quicker and cheaper to buy it in bulk.

Bulk Soil. Bulk soil is measured in yards. 1 yard equals 27 cubic feet. Think about it as a cube that is 3′ X 3′ X 3′.

Triple mix soil is generally used to enrich existing garden soil, making it more conducive to plant growth. It's especially popular for vegetable gardens, flower beds, and other areas where soil fertility is critical. Topsoil: This type of soil is the upper, outermost layer of soil, usually the top 5 to 10 inches.

This mix contains approximately 50% sedge peat moss, 35% black topsoil and 15% USGA spec sand. This mixture is the ultimate all-purpose soil mix, it works great everywhere from lawn dressing, flower beds, gardens, and planters, installing sod and seeding new lawns.

And you may be surprised to learn, it's actually a soilless mix! If you use Triple Blend mix, top soil or black earth in your containers, you will find that they will become very dense and heavy. While ideal for the garden, triple mix and top soil are not well suited for containers.

A-1, A-2, and A-3 are granular soils with 35% or less passing the #200 sieve. These groups include gravel or sand (A-1), fine sand (A-3), and silty or clayey gravel and sand (A-2). A-4, A-5, A-6, and A-7 are soils where more than 35% passes the #200 sieve. These groups include silty and clayey soil.
