What is the main message of ratatouille? ›

At its core, “Ratatouille” entertains one foundational question: Should we as a people choose ignorance or empathy? In the film, rats are stigmatized to only be troublemakers, and humans to only be killers. But, Remy the rat makes a different choice.

Fun fact: the signature dish Rémy serves at the end of Ratatouille isn't technically a ratatouille; it's a tian, which is an artful arrangement of sliced summer vegetables baked over a tomato and pepper sauce.

Remy : [voiceover] I know I'm supposed to hate humans, but there's something about them. They don't just survive, they discover, they create. I mean, just look at what they do with food!

Chef Skinner leaves the tipsy Linguini to clean up the kitchen, and Linguini is sound asleep when Colette arrives early the next morning. Remy fails to properly wake Linguini up, and resorts into putting sunglasses on him, and manipulating his body to make him appear awake.

Ratatouille is a movie about a rat who is a chef. Since most people prefer to keep rats out of the kitchen, the concept of this film is ironic; it begins with a gap between what we expect and what happens. Irony is used in books and movies to engage the reader and emphasize important points.

Sad: Remy Loses His Family

Emile and Remy eventually give themselves away while in the old lady's kitchen, and the old lady is not happy about it. She chases the rats with a shotgun and eventually, the chase causes the entire ceiling to cave in, revealing Remy's family and their home.

At the end of Ratatouille, Remy's dream comes true in which he becomes the head chef at the La Ratatouille bistro in Paris.

The teeming summer gardens of Mediterranean France are the inspiration for and source of ratatouille, a dish whose name is taken from two related words: ratouiller, meaning to agitate or stir a liquid, and tatouiller, meaning to beat (as in the drumbeat called the tattoo) or to shake.

However, he does still speak to Remy as his "conscience". When Remy asks how a man can communicate with a rat, Auguste admits that he is a figment of Remy's imagination and it is Remy's mind that is channeling him from the great beyond. The character has some parallels to the real chef, Ettore Boiardi.

Linguini is the son of Auguste Gusteau and Renata Linguini. He knows nothing about cooking, which can be seen from the many Chinese take-out cartons in his refrigerator and his lack of cooking skills and knowledge. He is attracted to Colette, the only female cook in the kitchen.

In the past, I have made no secret of my disdain for Chef Gusteau's famous motto, "Anyone can cook." But I realize, only now do I truly understand what he meant. Not everyone can become a great artist; but a great artist *can* come from *anywhere*.

He is not a typical rat, and his personality is more like that of a human, as he walks on two feet instead of four because he doesn't like the idea of his paws touching both the ground and the food he eats. What he thinks of his talent is a bit of modesty, as shown when Linguini asked him if he could actually cook.

10. The Story. What makes Ratatouille so special is that its story covers so many bases without feeling overstuffed: Remy's storyline deals with identity and finding one's passion, Linguini has to learn to grow a backbone, and the commercialization of good food even gets its nose into the picture.

One of the biggest themes in this movie is perseverance. I think this is a great theme because a lot of people can relate to it; anyone who keeps going even when they might not want to is persevering. This theme is shown in “Ratatouille” through Remy.

This heartbreaking story was not an invention. Pixar took inspiration from Bernard Loiseau, a gastronomical legend from France who died by suicide when he found out about a star that was going to be knocked off. Like Gusteau, Loiseau was also a pioneer in French cuisine, and foodies would recognize the parallels well.

Resolution: But the health inspector shuts Gusteau's down due to a rat infestation. With Anton backing them, Remy, Linguini, and Colette open a new restaurant. This is a lovely example of how a little “bittersweet” can keep a happy ending from being too pat.
