The Northern Kentucky University men’s soccer team (6-4-3) will step out of Horizon League play for a nonconference match at Eastern Illinois (2-9-0) on Wednesday. Links to live stats are available through NKUNorse.com.
This will be the third meeting all-time between Northern Kentucky and Eastern Illinois with the Norse leading the series 2-0. The Panthers have two wins coming into the match defeating Lipscomb (8/30) and Robert Morris (9/6). Their nine losses have come against Xavier(8/28), Pittsburgh (9/4), Wright State (9/12), Kentucky (9/22), Oral Roberts (9/26), Northern Illinois (9/29), Missouri State (10/6), IPFW (10/10) and Western Illinois (10/17).
Tyler Oliver leads Eastern Illinois offensively with nine points on four goals and one assist. Mike Novotny has logged the most minutes in goal for the Panthers with a record of 2-7 and a goals-against average of 3.39 with 48 saves.
The Norse sport a road record of 4-2-1 so far in 2015. Additionally, the Norse are 3-3-0 in nonconference play.
Senior NKU goalkeeper A.J. Fleak earned his fifth shutout of the season against Valparaiso on Saturday. Fleak now has 15 for his career as a Norse, moving him to third all-time in program history. Fleak and fellow goalkeeper Toby Frohlich have combined for a team total of six shutouts this season.
As of Tuesday, Northern Kentucky sits atop the Horizon League standings with 12 points, followed by UIC (11 points) and Wright State (10 points). In the individual conference categories, senior NKU goalkeeper A.J. Fleak ranks first in save percentage (.877), saves (64), saves per game (5.82).
Northern Kentucky battled League foe Valparaiso to a 0-0 (2OT) draw on Saturday. The Norse took 14 shots with three on goal, while senior goalkeeper A.J. Fleak notched seven saves on 18 shots faced.
The Norse return to League play at home against Green Bay on Saturday, Oct. 24, with kickoff set for 1 p.m. The match has been tabbed Senior Day with a ceremony to honors this year’s departing seniors.
NKU men’s golf team 11th, women 8th in Dayton Flyer
The Northern Kentucky University men’s golf team wrapped up play in the Dayton Flyer Invitational on Tuesday afternoon with an 11th-place showing. NKU carded rounds of 310-314 to finish the tournament at 56-over. The NKU women’s team finished eighth.
Clayton Portz was the top finisher for the men at t-26th for the Norse after posting a final round 76. After matching Portz on Monday, Logan Gamm was a mere two strokes back Tuesday. The freshman earned a share of 37th at 14-over.
Jacob Poore and Jackson Frame shot matching scores of 9-over on the day to finish t-46th and t-55th, respectively. An 11-over par final round for Jacob Brinker led to a share of 55th-place with Frame.
Detroit won both the team title and individual crown after Wil Wittman topped IUPUI’s Austin Winings in a play-off.
Northern Kentucky wrapped up its fall season at the event and will hit the tees at the Houston Baptist Invitational in Houston on Feb. 29.
Norse Notes
— The Norse were among the tournament leaders in par-3 scoring, averaging 3.42 strokes to finish fourth in the field.
— Brinker and Poore were among the event’s best players on par-3s and par-4s, respectively. Brinker played the par-3s at 1-over (t-4th), while Poore was just 4-over on par-4s (t-8th)
Rounds of 322-320 helped the Northern Kentucky University women’s golf team finish in eighth-place in the 15-team field at the 2015 Dayton Fall Invitational on Tuesday afternoon on the North Course at NCR Country Club.
Sarah Kellam carded NKU’s low score for both rounds of the event, including a final round 9-over that resulted in the junior finishing t-16th (+16).
Ryleigh Waltz and MacKenzie Laumann each carded scores of 10-over on the day. Waltz climbed into a share of 33rd, while Laumann moved up to t-57th. NKU’s final countable score came from Allison Leigeb, who shot 11-over and finished t-40th.
Tara Clark, who competed as an individual, earned a share of 64th and Macy Wright finished 74th.
Indianapolis won the team title by virtue of a tie-break and Findlay’s Kasey Petty claimed individual medalist honors at 6-over par for the tourney.
Northern Kentucky returns to the tee box on Oct. 26 for the Charles Braun Intercollegiate hosted by Evansville in Evansville, Indiana. Kellam won last year’s rain-shortened event and looks to repeat as individual medalist.

— Five of the six Norse competing recorded birdies on the day, led by Kellam and Waltz with three apiece.
— As a team, NKU finished third in the tournament with 12 birdies, trailing fellow Horizon League member Oakland by three in the category.
