Meet the SCJ's 2023-24 Large School All-Area Boys' Basketball Team (2024)

The 2023-24 SCJ Large School All-Area Boys Basketball team features Player of the Year Jesse Van Kalsbeek, a senior from MOC-Floyd Valley.

Van Kalsbeek led the Dutch to Iowa's Class 3A state semifinals this winter and was named the state's 'Mr. Basketball' by the Iowa Print Sportswriters' Association despite missing the start of the season with an injury.

After being among Iowa's most prolific scorers and rebounders on the prep level, Van Kalsbeek will play collegiately at the Northwestern College.

On the first-team, Van Kalsbeek is joined by one of South Dakota's best scorers and rebounders in Dakota Valley senior Jaxson Wingert, who led the Panthers to a third-place finish at the S.D. Class A state tournament, where he was named to his second all-state tournament team.

Wingert's teammate, junior Luke Bruns is also a first-team selection. Van Kalsbeek and the DV duo are also flanked by two-time first-team all-stater Matt Noll of Bishop Heelan as well as a pair of first time all-staters in Sioux City East's Fitzy Grant and Vermillion's Trey Hansen.

Stats: 26 ppg, 10.8 rpg, 2.1 apg, 2 spg, 1.5 bpg, 61.6% FG, 76.1% FT

Honors: IPSWA's Mr. Basketball for Iowa, Class 3A all-state first-team (captain), Class 3A all-state tournament team, all-Siouxland Conference first-team (unanimous), finished prep career with over 1,000 career points and over 500 career rebounds

Highlights: The Northwestern College recruit had the second-highest scoring average in Iowa's Class 3A, fifth-most rebounds per game in 3A, averaged the most field goals made per game (10.2) in 3A and fourth-most free throws made per game (4.9) in 3A

Jaxson Wingert, Dakota Valley, senior

Stats: 25.9 ppg, 8.3 rpg, 1.6 apg, 1 spg, 59% FG, 38% 3PT, 76% FT

Honors: SDHSAA Class A all-state first-team, Class A all-state tournament team, all-Dakota XII Conference MVP

Highlights: The Briar Cliff commit had the second-highest scoring average in S.D. (all classes), ninth-highest rebounding average (all classes), scored over 1,300 career points and tallied over 560 career rebounds

Matt Noll, Bishop Heelan, senior

Stats: 21.1 ppg, 10.6 rpg, 2.6 apg, 1.1 spg, 52.3% FG, 68.7% FT

Honors: IPSWA Class 3A all-state first-team, all-Missouri River Athletic Conference first-team

Highlights: The Wayne State recruit averaged the eighth-most points per game in Iowa's Class 3A, grabbed the seventh-most rebounds per game in 3A, averaged the third-most free throw makes (5.1) and fourth-most defensive rebounds (7.5) per game in 3A, scored over 1,000 career points and grabbed over 500 career rebounds

Luke Bruns, Dakota Valley, junior

Stats: 18.8 ppg, 5.6 rpg, 2 apg, 1.3 spg, 44% FG, 37% 3PT, 76% FT

Honors: SDHSAA Class A all-state second-team, Class A all-state tournament team, all-Dakota XII Conference second-team

Highlights: Among top 12 in scoring average in S.D., second on team in rebounds per game, third-highest assist and steal averages on Panthers

Fitzy Grant, Sioux City East, senior

Stats: 15.3 ppg, 6.6 rpg, 2 apg, 1.9 spg, 65.7% FG, 66% FT

Honors: IPSWA Class 4A all-state second-team, all-Missouri River Athletic Conference first-team

Highlights: The Morningside commit had the fifth-highest scoring average with the fifth-best rebounding average in the MRAC and finished with the conference's best field goal percentage of players who took a minimum of 65 shot attempts

Trey Hansen, Vermillion, sophom*ore

Stats: 17 ppg, 6.7 rpg, 3.3 apg, 2.5 spg, 40% FG, 28% 3PT, 78% FT

Honors: SDHSAA Class A all-state honorable mention, all-Dakota XII Conference second-team

Highlights: Led Vermillion to an eighth-place finish at South Dakota's Class A state tournament by leading the team in scoring

Stats: 12.3 ppg, 5.5 rpg, 3.8 apg, 2.1 spg, 1 bpg, 51.9% FG, 30.4% 3PT

Honors: All-Missouri River Athletic Conference first-team

Highlights: Averaged the second-most assists per game in MRAC and third-most blocks per game in conference

Bilal Yusuf, Sioux City East, junior

Stats: 11.3 ppg, 3.1 rpg, 2.2 apg, 1.3 spg, 51.4% FG, 38.2% 3PT, 73.7% FT

Honors: All-Missouri River Athletic Conference first-team

Highlights:Second-best scoring average and second-most assists per game on Black Raiders

Manasse Kasonga-Malu, Sioux City East, junior

Stats: 10.5 ppg, 8.6 rpg, 1.2 apg, 1 spg, 65.6% FG, 60% FT

Honors: All-Missouri River Athletic Conference second-team

Highlights: Had the second-best field goal percentage in MRAC (min. 65 shot att.), averaged third-most rebounds per game in MRAC with most offensive rebounds per game (3.5) in conference

Carson Bruhn, Sioux Center, senior

Stats: 13.6 ppg, 8.2 rpg, 2.4 apg, 63.2% FG, 75.9% FT

Honors: All-Siouxland Conference first-team

Highlights: Had the highest field goal percentage (min. 65 shot att.) and averaged third-most rebounds per game in Siouxland Conference, made the fifth-most field goals per game (5.2) in conference

Blake Aalbers, MOC-Floyd Valley, junior
