Hi all.
I was wondering if someone can date this clock.
Picked it up yesterday, runs well and is in real good condition.
Company is W&H SCH with a #5 under the makers stamp.
Sorry the pictures are not the greatest.....................
Thanks.
Dave.

In my opinion, the style of the clock's case is,

for this example

, a more valid factor in dating the W&H Sch mark of the movement of these finely made clocks.

I believe the referenced trade mark was used between about 1850 to as late as 1933; thus not really helpful in establishing the age of the clock.

The numeral 5 means nothing to me. It could identify which facility in Schwartzenbach produced the movement plate, or it could identify the intended exporter/importer or one of the many sellers, jobbers or retailer in addition to the known W&H retail store in London. The numeral 1 is more commonly found and some have opined it denotes a number one "first quality." (very doubtful but none-the-less it is what gets posted for us to take as "Gospel.")

The case of dudeman's example is, in my opinion distinctively English and the wood case may have been made in England. The particular style is somewhat common for a classic English/ Scottish/ Irish/ Welch domestic mantel clock in vogue there between about 1890 and 1910 but a well informed Brit would have a better opinion than I.

Hi all.
I do know it is a Winterhalder & Hofmeier, but I was wondering if there is a way of dating them?
I did look the movement over for stamping's, and did not see any other than the makers mark.
I guess I should have been clear in the first post.
I did some research and came across one picture for a Ebay auction from 2007, but that was it.
I was hoping that I could have looked at the original auction (like you can do sometimes on expired items), but no go...........
On an eBay item, the exact clock I have, and seller says it is 1850-1899.
I can not link to eBay (forum rules).
Thanks.
Dave.

Dude, post a link! The rules prohibit links to *live* auctions. If it was a sold item, go for it.

Needless to say, without provenance or other reliable methods of dating, people can & will say anything they want.

I have one of these exact clocks, and have had it for many years. Of all the styles of Winterhalder clocks, this style seems to be quite common. They were made as yours (ting tang on the quarters), or with a Westminster chime movement, and they were sold with 'switches' at the top left and right corner. These switches turned off the chime, or adjusted the time by raising or lowering the pendulum. I believe the Westminster chime cases were bigger. They needed to be deeper to accommodate the large gong set. I have also seen a few cases that were larger (taller). I have even seen a couple of different styles of carving in the triangular area near the top. I suspect that the case style was popular and the company made them in the different sizes to accommodate either of the movements. The e-bay clock mentioned 1850-1899. The 1850 is far too early. A more appropriate date would be 1900-1915. These clocks were imported into England and many were sold there. Mine has a name inked on the chapter ring of a retailer in Dundee, Scotland. Even the back plate of the dial is also marked with the name.

The brick effect is quite common, picked one the same from an auction for £40. Was very lucky, as know one new about them, I recognised it straight away from a distance, as the auction had started, sold it for 8 1/2 times what I paid for it on flea bay.

Hello,
R.O. Schmitt Fine Arts auction sold this model 10/31/2004. Identification indicated @1890. You can see the listing if you search:
antiqueclockspriceguide.com Click on the first entry then click Maker and go to the W section, scroll down to Winterhalder and Hofmeier (61) and click on it then scroll until you find your clock. The detailed information on the clock is only available if you subscribe to the site.
