Chapter three: Practice can be deadly - Felixa (2024)

Brooklynn wakes up early morning this time putting on her school uniform the detectives provided. Her magenta eyes gaze at the long mirror in the corner of the room. Now wearing the white button up shirt and purple tie with a matched colored plaid skirt and black leggings. Of course you'd be required to wear uniforms at a private school, but at least these ones are cute. Putting her long burnette hair in two pigtails she just finishes getting ready when there's a knock at the door. Sonny nagging for the girl to hurry up from the other side. Shouting a reply she grabs her stuff before heading out the door.

It's a few minutes to spare until the second hour class bell rings. Brooklynn gets everything covered of her arrival with her new math teacher Mr. Burgan. Since she came so late yesterday they only made it as early as third hour. After assigning a seat she goes back to her desk, so happeningly by Sonny's again. "You know just because you're my guardian or whatever doesn't mean you have to stick to me like glue."

"If you're referring to the seating arrangements that's purely coincidental," he replies, while setting up for class.

The sudden giggling and squeals causes Brooklynn to look away from the him, and up towards the one just strolling in the classroom. A taller boy with whisky blond hair and beautiful emerald eyes comes into sight. He has on a school green and white sweater vest and tie along with black uniform shorts. He gives a charming smile to the room that makes her heart skip a beat.

"He's...gorgeous! Who is that?" All the girls stare googly eyed and get up to greet the boy as soon as he steps in. Brooklynn can't take her eyes off of him as he walks past towards his seat.

"That's Josef Huxley, aka the prince of the school. Most girls here are crushing hard on him." The sudden answer coming from a girl behind Brooklynn with her nose in a book.

"I can see why..." Her mind drifting off as she pictures the male walking over to her. A scarlet blush comes across her face as he leans over the desk so close their faces is only centimeters apart.

"Hira, you are the most beautiful girl I have ever laid eyes on. Please be my girlfriend."

"I-It would be an honor, Josef."

"Come on. Let's go take a ride on my unicorn together." Him grabbing her hand as the two jump out the window on the unicorn soaring off into the rainbow skies.

Brooklynn sighs softly peeking back at the boy once more. The girl makes a face when seeing her dreamy gaze. "Sorry to ruin your fantasy but everyone wishes of getting with Josef and it never happens. He's the principal's son and his family has a lot of money."

"I see..." Working as head master for a school like this would have to bring a lot of income. No wonder he's so popular and he already gots the looks. Brooklynn would like to at least introduce herself to him when class is over.

The teacher frustratedly tries to get the girls attention so he can start class up. Thinking about it she hasn't really spoke too much with anyone yet, given it only being her second day. Glancing back at the girl behind her again Brooklynn can tell she is pretty short, even with her sitting down. She has on a purple shirt similar to Sonny's and the same uniform skirt matched with white socks instead. Her white hair just touches her shoulders with a big black ribbon and large olive eyes.

"By the way, what's your name?" Brooklynn acquires, but before she can respond another name is called out for attendance.

"Raylen Evergreen."

"Present," she announces softly, as the man continues to the next row. Guess that answers her question.

"You're Hira Collins. I remember you in my gym hour from yesterday too."

"Yeah, that's my name. Sorry it's still a lot of faces to remember, especially with changing classes."

"It's fine. This school isn't as fancy as they make it to be, but hopefully you like it here." She says with a small smile, but the burnette doesn't get the chance to drag the conversation any futher. Mr Burgan now starting to write math problems down on the board. Not wanting to get in trouble after detention the day before, sits foward in her chair for the lesson.

When the bell rings kids head out the shorter female leaving with a small wave. Brooklynn wishes she could have got the chance to talk with her a bit more. It is more lonely with Dena and Ashley presence absent.

Several girls wave to the blonde boy as they go. Brooklynn wishing she had the nerve to walk over and introduce herself. Gathering her things the burnette eyes grow wide when Josef stops right by her desk. "We missed you yesterday new girl."

"I-I had got here a late."

"Welcome to Langfield. I hope you're finding everything okay?"

"Um, yes and it's a great school." Blocking out the complaints of more homework and endless periods far from her mind.

"Well we should be going. Don't wanna be late for third hour," Sonny interrupts. Basically dragging Brooklynn out the room behind him.

"Okay, okay! What's your problem?"

"I hope you haven't forgotten the reason you're here. You need to stay focused on the mission at hand."

"It doesn't mean I can't make friends while I'm at it!" She argues back, and a sly smile spreads across his face.

"Friends, huh? Is that all you were hoping for?"

"What are you hinting at?"

"I was sitting right next to you, Brooke. I saw the way you kept drooling over at him. That couldn't have been a look of someone who wants just a friendship."

The burnette feels her face burning at his remark. I mean she only just met the guy of course she doesn't like it! "I-I was not! Shut up!"

"You need to get ahold of your powers through practice so we can start searching for the Erebus chest. Preferably before Duran tries to kill me and kidnap you again, whichever comes first."

...

They get picked up by the agents again after school and go back to the training room. This time placing a large desk inside the room in front of them. Brooklynn stares quizically as the two watch nearby and Sonny takes over. "Alright, let's begin. Yesterday you worked on lifting lighter objects and moving them. Today you need to try and levitate bigger things like this desk here."

"You really think I can lift something so heavy?"

"I'm sure you can but you'll never know otherwise."

She nods and begins the usual method from before. Eyes glued at the table and blocking any other distractions. "Come on, lift, lift..."

Stretching her arm out as she repeats the phrase even quicker. Slowly the desk starts to lift up off the floor.

"It's working..." Sonny mumbles to himself as they all watch silently.

It goes higher and higher until she throws her arm the opposite direction. "Move to the left!" The desk flies at her action hitting the wall with a loud bang. Luckily being aimed just right not to break anything. A smile comes across her face reliazing the success. "I was able to do it!"

"That was great! Better than I expected," Sonny exclaims.

The two men exchanging a grin of their own as practice continues on. After a little more work she is able to use her power faster than at the start. With it getting closer to curfew Ron gestures towards a weapon rack. Explaining this is her last exercise before they will leave. "Feel free to choose whatever weapon works best for you."

"There's so much to pick from..." With quite the variety between several axes, bows, swords, and staffs. However four identical small swords with ribbons on the ends catches her eye. She picks them all up at once with her power, suprised by how low in weight. "I choose these."

"A-All of them?" Jerry asks, and Ron's lips tug down a little.

"If that's what you want it's fine, but make sure you can focus on constantly using your telekinesis to carry them while using other magic.

"I think I'll be able to handle it. They seem pretty light and easy to control."

"Alright then. Sonny can help you practice a bit with his own weapon before we get you kids out of here," Jerry says, with the rest of practice in secession.

When training finally does end her body feels exhausted. All that physical activity is like another workout. It may be a little fun but tiring nonetheless.

They don't make it far down the road when Jerry gets a sudden call. Keeping his eyes on the street as he reaches around for his cell. "Hello? Yes we-what! N-No, I didn't think that mattered because...Oh, I understand. We're on are way."

Ron crosses his arms with a sigh as the call ends. "What did you do?"

"Why do you automatically assume it was me?! There's a problem with our last report though. Boss is already pissed so we need to hurry back."

"If that's the case why don't you just drop us off here. It's not much farther of a walk to go anyway, and it's still light out."

"Huh?" Brooklynn is taken aback by Sonny's sudden suggestion for both of them to follow. She is the one who just got done practicing for over three hours. "Hey, that's-"

"Too lazy to walk?"

"N-No! I was just about to say I completely agree with you!"

"If you kids are sure." Jerry pulls over and lets them out the car then quickly taking off. The pair start walking down the sidewalk towards the school in silence.

Stupid Sonny, now we're stuck walking.

"You're probably pretty tired, I know. But I just didn't want them getting into more trouble than they already will, especially more so Jerry. You did a great job today."

"Oh, thanks. It isn't as hard as I thought it would be. Hey, I've been meaning to ask, are you really my age or just pretending that for the sake of your job?"

"A year under you actually though I am in eight grade. It just worked out for us in that case. It wasn't like that with Ryder."

"You mean the last Felixa before me...How did he die anyway? And how long have you been a guardian for?" She's a little afraid to know the answer to the first, but can't stop from being curious. Perhaps knowing what happened can stop a similar fate from befalling on herself. Glancing over at Sonny with still no answer he looks conflicted. His ocean eyes lost in deep thought. Maybe it's too soon and he doesn't care to speak on it.

"Well, Ryder he um-!" His stammering is cut off when they both hear someone or more something following behind them.

"M-Monsters! It's another monster attack!" A woman exclaims, and that causes everyone in sight to run frantically for cover.

The teens turning around a bunch of gray monsters that resemble small walking octopuses have appeared out of nowhere. Luckily very few people are out around now, but the monsters pays no tension to those screaming only focusing on them. "Argh! What the-where did they come from?! Is it that Gores guy again?"

"No, he would of attacked us directly! This must be the hand of Duran." A monsters tentacle swings just about to hit Brooklynn when Sonny puts his reflective shield in just the nick of time. "Come on! There are too many to fight!"

Grabbing her hand the two take off running with the monsters fast on their tails. Brooklynn glances back to see the gap between them closing in quickly. They'll never outrun them at this rate. "How are we suppose to run away from that?! We need another plan!"

Sonny suddenly comes to a halt which only has her heart beat even faster. They're catching up to us definitely doesn't mean let's stop running entirely. "What are you doing?!"

"Just our luck."

"Huh?"

"Over there!" She doesn't even get a chance to see what he's talking about before dragging her over to a blue convertible with the keys left inside. Sonny can't be suggesting what she thinks he is. They can't just steal someone's car and besides, he just got done informing that he's a year under her age. It's no way a thirteen year old knows how to drive.

"We can't just hop in someone's car and take off!" She objects, while Sonny pushes her towards the door. Then quickly going around and grabbing the driver's seat for himself.

"We don't really have a choice. We can return it after we lose them."

"Can you even drive this thing?!"

"Well if arcade games count as driving," he answers with a cheeky smile.

"I'm going to die today." Forget about the organization she'll be lucky this doesn't end her first.

Adjusting the mirrors he starts up the ignition just as the monsters catch up. "Buckle up!" he advises Brooklynn, who lets out a small yelp as the vehicle flies off down the road.

Just after they pull out an old man comes out of a nearby store yelling. "That's my car you darn brats!" Moving as fast as his old legs allow he waves down a young man driving past.

"Hello, can I help you Sr-"

"After that convertible! Those kids are stealing my car!" Not waiting for an answer as he gets in his passenger seat.

The car goes fast enough but constant switching between the gas and the breaks is having it be a bumpy ride. Not to mention the swerving he's doing is making her woozy. "Can't you keep the wheel straight a little?"

"That's what I'm trying to do! It's much more complicated using a steering wheel on an actual car! Huh?" Both glancing up at the front mirror to spot a red car zooming behind them. It maneuvers to the lane next to theirs as the window is rolled down. Now revealing an angry elderly man shaking his fist at them.

"Pull over right now you little rascals!"

"Oh my gosh, this is his car! I told you this was a bad idea!" Brooklynn sinking futher in her seat as Sonny lets out a sigh.

"Sorry old guy but that's not happening right now!" Stepping on the gas the convertible pulls futher ahead. The old man screaming all the louder as Brooklynn holds on tightly to the seatbelt trap.

Despite the speed it's going the monsters still manage to catch up. Sonny frowns seeing a glimpse of them in the rearview mirror. "We need to slow them down somehow. Electric shockwave!" he casts, turning around quickly.

Brooklynn freaks out even more with only one of his hands on the wheel and neither eyes on the road. "S-Sonny! Oh..." Electrical waves comes from his right hand sapping some of the monsters away to nothing. It must be another one of the powers they posses like the fire she's witnessed before. Though the group has shrunk the battle is far from over.

Approaching a dead end there's only a left route to take. "You need to turn, can you make it?!"

"Just hold tight! It's going to be a sharp one!" Yanking the wheel both young teens jerk toward the right. The burnette only reliazing she closed her eyes upon opening them. The car is still in one piece with the turn successfully made.

"W-We didn't crash! I'm still alive!"

"I wouldn't count chickens just yet."

Hearing the screeching of more tires Brooklynn looks back to see the red car doing the same. "You're not getting away that easily!" The old man hanging out the car as before.

"Why did I pull over? I just want to go home..." The younger cries sadly to himself.

The monsters are still in pursuit though they don't, or more he doesn't appear fazed by it in the least. "Does he not care about the monsters at all?!" Brooklynn exclaims, as Sonny nervously keeps his eye on the enemies inching closer.

"We can't be doing any time of magic out in the open like this...Use your powers!"

"Me?! Use mine on them...?"

"Yes!" She frantically searches for something to levitate. Several small marble tables are outside a fancy cafe they fly pass.

"Okay, um...lift, lift..." She chants, however it doesn't move at all. It's too much going on and she just can't focus properly. "I-It isn't working!"

"You can do this Brooke, I know you can! Just relax!" He looks at her only for a second with calm eyes despite the situation. "Take a deep breath. This is no different than in practice."

"...Right!" His genuine words does calm down her nerves a bit. Trying once more her arm lifts up many tables and chairs at once. Throwing them at the monsters does kill a few, but there's still others left lingering. "It wasn't enough!"

(Duran POV)

Inside the innermost chambers of the dark ruins, Gores is spying on them through a magic dark ball. Turning to the elderly man beside him clothed in black. "Pretty interesting ability, wouldn't you say?"

"So, that's her power..." A cruel smirk forming on his lips with what he just discovered. Accomplishing all he wanted for today, Duran snaps his fingers.

(Brooklynn POV)

The monsters that were still chasing them suddenly disappears into thin air. "They're gone..." he mumbles, looking back at the empty street. All besides the red car continuing to blow his horn at them.

"Where'd they go?" Brooklynn asked, though eyes widening when she turns back around. "Ah! Sonny, watch out!"

A/N What did Brooklynn see? It'll be revealed in the next part.
