Alabama singer sails into ‘Voice’ finals: ‘Anything is possible if you believe’ (2024)

Alabama has a finalist on Season 25 of “The Voice.”

Asher HaVon, a soul singer from Selma, earned a spot in the top five on the NBC reality series this week, and the opportunity to compete in the finals. HaVon heard the good news on Tuesday’s results episode, along with his coach Reba McEntire and viewers watching the hourlong show.

HaVon will sing again on Monday, May 20, during a two-hour performance episode, hoping to earn viewer votes and win the season title. The “Voice” winner will be announced on Tuesday, May 21, during a two-hour grand finale.

HaVon, 31, was one of the five artists declared safe this week, along with Josh Sanders of Kannapolis, North Carolina; Nathan Chester of Chicago, Illinois; Bryan Olesen of Lincoln, Nebraska; and Karen Waldrup of Mandeville, Louisiana. HaVon and Sanders are on Team Reba, Waldrup is on Team Dan & Shay and Chester and Oleson are on Team Legend, coached by John Legend.

“Anything is possible if you believe,” HaVon said on Tuesday, just before his name was announced by series host Carson Daly. That sentiment definitely applies to his journey on “The Voice,” and HaVon was answering a question from Daly about what he’d like to say to folks in his hometown.

Selma was featured on Monday’s performance episode of “The Voice,” which included hometown tributes from the top 9 singers.

“I would not be here without Selma,” HaVon said on Monday. “Selma has given me a foundation that I don’t believe I would have gotten anywhere else. The people that are in Selma understand what it means to come from small beginnings and face the world. She’s a beautiful example on how to handle adversity gracefully and rise above it, and still stand. And as an artist, every time I stand on stage, I just feel like the strength that Selma has taught me always shows up and (will) catapult me forward.”

Selma, of course, is a historic city in the Black Belt, famed for events that took place there in the 1960s during the civil rights movement. Each year, a re-enactment of the Selma-to-Montgomery march for voting rights is held in Selma, attended by political figures, Hollywood stars, state dignitaries and more.

HaVon’s fans in Alabama are sure to tune in for the “Voice” finals next week, rooting for him to bring home a victory. The powerhouse singer has a couple of celebrity coaches firmly in his corner, as well.

McEntire is one of HaVon’s biggest cheerleaders, and the country star gave her protege a nudge toward the finals with effusive praise on Monday when HaVon covered Beyonce’s “Irreplaceable.”

“You coming out and singing this Beyonce song absolutely floored me,” McEntire said. “I’m so proud of you. You have grown so much, your appearance, your stage presence, and your singing’s always been magnificent. Thank you for shining for God.”

Legend chimed in with kudos of his own.

“Asher, my dad texted me this week and said, ‘Asher is the Voice,’” Legend said. “Now, I’m a little biased toward my team, but I will say this: No matter what other factors people are voting on, I think you’re the best vocalist in this competition. And you show that with every song, no matter what you sing. You can sing, man, just flat out.”

HaVon is the only Alabama singer to make it this far on “The Voice” during Season 25. Five singers from the state were featured on the show this season, but the others were eliminated during previous episodes. Along with HaVon, they were Val T Webb of Birmingham, Ducote Talmage of Auburn, Rivers Grayson of Muscle Shoals and Corey Curtis, a Saraland resident.

“I’M GOING TO THE FINALE!!!!!!!,” HaVon said in an Instagram post on Tuesday night. “@nbcthevoice OMG!!!!!! Thank you America!!!!!! I am screaming, crying, jumping and singing high notes!!!! I will see you next week!”

The state’s never had a winner on “The Voice” during its 13-year history on television. However, more than 30 contestants from the state have made their marks on the show over the years, starting with Nakia Reynoso in Season 1 and continuing through Season 25.

Four singers from Alabama have competed in “The Voice” finals during previous seasons, finishing in third or fourth place. D. Smooth, an R&B singer from Birmingham, took third place during Season 23 in 2023. Dexter Roberts, a country singer from Fayette, was the third-place finisher during Season 16 in 2019. Kirk Jay, a soulful country crooner from Bay Minette, took third place on Season 15 in 2018. Red Marlow, a country singer from Rogersville, was the fourth-place finisher on Season 13 in 2017.
