Class of 2023 – Class of 2027

With record-breaking application volume and ever lower admit rates, the Class of 2027 admissions statistics are extremely similar to those for the Class of 2026. The continuing trends of high application numbers, low acceptance rates, test optional policies and commitment to a diverse class appear to be here to stay. At least for one more admissions cycle.

But not everyone is smashing records. As reported in our March Madness: Class of 2027 College Admissions Edition post, Amherst, Columbia, Harvard, MIT, UCLA and UC Berkeley, among others, saw a drop in application volume.

Once again, UPenn, Stanford, Princeton and Cornell withheld admissions statistics for their newly formed Classes of 2027. We expect that this trend will continue and contribute to the problematic lack of transparency in college admissions.

Review of the Ivy League & MIT Class of 2027 — Entering Fall 2023

Brown University

The University offered admission to 5.09 percent of its applicants to the Class of 2027, up from last year’s acceptance rate of 5.06 percent for the Class of 2026. Out of the 51,302 students who applied—the largest pool in Brown’s history —2,609 students were admitted. The 1,730 students accepted through the regular decision process joined the 879 students admitted in December. The rate of admission for the ED round stood at 12.98 percent.

Last year, Brown offered admission to 5.06 percent of its applicants to the Class of 2026 when 2,562 students were admitted from a pool of 50,649 students. For the Class of 2025, 2,568 students were accepted from a pool of 46,568 applicants.

Columbia University

For the Class of 2027, Columbia accepted 2,246 students from 57,129 applications. The acceptance rate of 3.93 percent is slightly above last year’s 3.73 percent when Columbia admitted 2,253 applicants from 60,377 applications. For this admission cycle, Columbia received 5,738 early decision applications and accepted 650 students for an admission rate of 11 percent.

Last year, Columbia accepted 2,562 students from 60,377 applications to the Class of 2026. The acceptance rate of 3.73 percent was slightly below the previous year of 3.89 percent when Columbia admitted 2,355 applicants from 60,551 applications to the Class of 2025.

Cornell University

Cornell announced that it admitted 4,994 applicants from a pool of more than 68,000 to the Class of 2027. In previous years, Cornell received 71,164 applications for admission to the Class of 2026 and admitted 5,168 students. 5,852 students out of 67,380 applicants were admitted to the Class of 2025.

Dartmouth College

Dartmouth College offered admission to 1,798 students for the Class of 2027 for an overall acceptance rate of 6.23 percent, down from last year’s 6.38 percent. The Class of 2027 saw a stable pool of 28,841 applications after last year’s 28,336. The total number of accepted students to the Class of 2027 includes the 578 admitted through the early decision process in December. Last year, Dartmouth College extended offers of admission to 1,808 applicants to its Class of 2025.

Harvard University

Harvard accepted 3.41 percent of applicants to its Class of 2027. This year, Harvard received a total of 56,937 applications compared to 61,221 for the Class of 2026. With 1,942 admitted students to the Class of 2027, the rate of admission increased from 3.24 percent to 3.41 percent for the combined SCEA and regular decision.

Harvard’s SCEA admit rate of 7.56 percent for the early round only is substantially higher than the regular decision acceptance rate of 2.57 percent. In the early round, Harvard University received 9,553 applications and accepted 722 students.

In previous years, Harvard received a total of 61,221 applications to the Class of 2026 and 57,.786 to the Class of 2025.

Penn – The University of Pennsylvania

Of the announced 59,000 students who applied to Penn’s Class of 2027 in the early and regular rounds, we estimate that about 3,300 were admitted, leading to an overall acceptance rate of below 6 percent. Penn announced that about 8,000 students applied through the early decision round but did not disclose the admissions’ rate.

Last year, 54,588 students applied to Penn’s Class of 2026. In the previous year. 3,304 were admitted to the Class of 2025, leading to an overall acceptance rate of 5.87 percent.

Princeton University

Princeton University did not release the statistics for the Class of 2027. According to its released Common Data Sets, Princeton offered admission to 2,167 students, or 4.57 percent of the 38,019 applicants to the Class of 2026. In the previous year, Princeton offered admission to 1,647 students, or 4.38 percent of the 37,601 applicants to the Class of 2025 and to 1,848 students, or 5.63 percent of the 32,835 applicants to the Class of 2024.

Yale University

Yale’s Office of Undergraduate Admissions accepted 2,275 students or 4.35 percent of the 52,250 students who applied to the Class of 2027. This represents a decrease from last year’s rate of 4.57 percent. The SCEA round accounted for 776 acceptances out of a pool of 7,744 applications.

Last year Yale accepted 2,289 students or 4.57 percent of the 50,060 students who applied to the Class of 2026. The SCEA round accounted for 800 acceptances out of a pool of 7,288 applications.

MIT – The Massachusetts Institute of Technology

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology admitted 1,259 students out of 26,914 applicants to the Class of 2027 for an acceptance rate of 4.68 percent. In its early round, MIT admitted 687 students out of 11,924 applications, yielding 5.76 percent, which is the lowest rate of acceptance in an early round among its peer group composed of the Ivy League and Stanford. There was a substantial decrease in applications likely due to MIT requiring standardized test scores in the application process.

Last year, for the Class of 2026, the school admitted 1,337 students out of a record 33,976 applicants for an acceptance rate of 3.94 percent. In its early round, MIT admitted 697 students out of 14,781 applications. For the Class of 2025, MIT admitted 1,365 students out of 33,240 applicants for an acceptance rate of 4.11 percent.
