For a long time, sneakers were the first shoe I reached for when I’d be on my feet all day. But lately, my clogs have been giving my beloved Air Force 1s some competition. Birkenstock Boston clogs and furry slip-ons from Ancient Greek Sandals are my go-to pairs when I’m running an errand in the neighborhood or taking out my compost. And I am not alone.
“A few years back, it was a trend that only a few people dared to wear, and that was mostly at home or in the garden,” says Christina Martini, founder and creative director of Ancient Greek Sandals. “There was a definite shift last season with many designers offering their version of the style, both on the runway and off. Now they have become a staple in every wardrobe. Practical, comfortable, and cool, I believe they are here to stay.”
The new generation of designer clogs looks good. So, good, in fact, that I almost bought a pair of Hermès clogs on the RealReal. But you don’t need to start there. If you’re considering making a first-time purchase, Martini suggests a furry shearling-lined clog for easy comfort, or a classic wooden-sole clog for a nostalgic fashion choice you can dress up or down. “The classic wooden-soled clog is perfect to wear on a relaxed weekend with socks and wide-leg jeans or cords, so they are just peeking out from under the hem, or with a chiffon long Chloé dress without socks,” she suggests. For a comfy alternative to your sandals this summer, maybe it’s time to try a pair of clogs on for size.
Pros
Classic, stylish
Cons
Stiffer sole
A wooden-soled leather clog is a traditional style that is a great start to any clog collection. The wood is stiffer than a rubber sole, but they are still comfortable for daily use.
Sizes: 5–11

What reviewers say: “I’ve been looking for clogs for a while and these are great, the height is just right for everyday use. I bought them half a size bigger because my feet are wide and they fit perfectly and feel comfortable to walk in.”
Pros
Playful design
Cons
Feet may get sweaty
There’s a good chance you’ve seen JW Anderson’s froggy rubber clogs before. The quirky silhouette punctuated by a smiling frog face is a signature from the brand, and, while ideal for gardening, can make for a funny addition to a street-style look too.

Cons
Harder to clean
“A shearling-lined clog is the most comfortable of all shoes,” says Martini. “Easy to wear with a relaxed fit, they are super cozy and can be worn both in the house and out. Great either barefoot or with socks, slide on a pair to run errands, go to yoga, take the dog for a walk, or for travel.”
Sizes: 36–42 EU
Materials: Shearling
Colors: Brown, off-white, black
Pros
Comfortable design
Cons
More of a casual look
I first got into Birkenstocks thanks to my dad, who has been wearing them for decades. Now, I own both the clog and the sandals, and count them among the top-worn shoes in my closet. They’re supremely comfortable and molded to my feet.
Sizes: 5–12
Materials: Suede
Colors: Black, taupe, stone, and more
What reviewers say: “I have to admit that I used to make fun of Birkenstocks. I honestly never thought that I would own a pair until I recently started getting backaches (from walking around barefoot so much during the pandemic) and I came across an article discussing how beneficial these shoes were for alleviating back pain. That piqued my interest so I started researching them online and I kept seeing all kinds of celebrities wearing them. And I have to say, they started to grow on me and soon they became one of those things that you find ‘ugly-cute’. After picking up my first pair of Birks in the Arizona style, I was in love.”
